Build a classic fall wardrobe with timeless pieces such as fitted jackets, pencil skirts, a crisp white shirt, leather boots, and a neutral trench coat.

There's no season that fashionistas love as much as fall. With tons of great clothes flooding stores it can be tempting to run out and buy a whole new wardrobe. But for most women that doesn't make a whole lot of financial sense. So rather than breaking the bank on a bunch of new outfits, try to fill the closet with classic fall pieces that will never go out of style.

There are several reasons to choose classics over trends. With the economy in such a slump and everyone tightening their belts, purchasing classic pieces that will have lasting power in one's wardrobe is a smart move. Trends are fun, but rarely permanent. Also, trends don't always look good on everyone. So don't fall for the gimmick. When it comes to spending money on clothing, invest in the classics, and accessorize with inexpensive trendier items such as costume jewelry, scarves, and other items.

Basic Elements of a Fall Wardrobe

There are a few items that should be in every woman's fall wardrobe.

  • Fitted Jacket – A blazer or tailored jacket is a definite must-have. Incredibly versatile, they can be paired with skirts, dresses, slacks, and jeans. Add femininity by wearing one over a sexy camisole, or go for a more classic look by wearing it over a button-down white shirt. For a sexy evening look try one buttoned up with only a bra underneath. No matter what the shape of the woman wearing it, a structured jacket, when properly fitted, flatters the feminine form.
  • White Shirt – It doesn't get simpler or more classic than a crisp, long sleeve, button-down, white shirt. It is a building block of any wardrobe. Wear them under jackets, cardigans, sweaters, or on their own. Pair them with slacks, skirts, or casual pants. There are very few occasions or events where a crisp white shirt cannot be worn.
  • Turtleneck Sweater – A cozy turtleneck sweater is perfect for walks out in the cool autumn air. Big sweaters are always nice for chilly fall weekends, but consider a fitted version to wear to the office. They're comfortable and they frame the face beautifully. Stick with black, cream, or winter-white as they can be paired with just about any other color. They also act as a great backdrop for fabulous fall jewelry.
  • Trench Coat – Neutral-colored trench coats have been a fall and spring wardrobe staple for years. They go with just about anything, be it casual wear or office wear, and they can even be dressed up for some evening occasions. Pair a calf-length trench with high-heeled leather boots for a chic and stylish ensemble. Make sure to purchase one of good quality as you will likely wear it for years to come.
  • Little Black or Gray Dress – Every woman knows how versatile a little black dress can be, but gray and charcoal can be just as useful to have. They can be worn at the office with a blazer, or dressed up for evening. They have limitless possibilities when it comes to accessorizing, so make sure to have at least one in the closet.
  • Pencil Skirt – Like with all of these pieces, a pencil skirt is flattering and versatile. Make sure to find one that is the appropriate length for your height and purchase it in a neutral color.

Must-Have Fall Accessories

A great fall wardrobe doesn't end with the clothing. Some enduring fall accessories that every woman should have are tall leather boots in black or brown (or preferably both), a leather tote that compliments your coat (neutrals are always safest), and a classic string of pearls.

The above items are all classic pieces that will endure. They should be the foundation of a great wardrobe. Many of these items are safest if purchased in black, brown, or white, but don't be afraid to try other fall colors such as burgundy, dark orange, aubergine, mossy greens, etc. What's important is that they are flattering to the person wearing them, and that they can be mixed and matched with as many other items as possible.

Since all of the items have staying power, be sure to invest in pieces of good quality. They should last for years. But remember, quality does not have to mean expensive, so use common sense and spend what feels comfortable.

With these items in the closet, any woman will have the building blocks of a beautiful and classic fall wardrobe.
