Whether it's crumpled or creased, acid wash or stone wash, jeans taken on a more distressed, weathered look for spring as we embrace the '80s once more.

One of the hottest (and most challenging?) trends in jeans right now is Acid Wash. From faded denim to jackets, dresses to skirts and shirts, acid wash is the casual look of the moment.

Love them or loathe them a ripped pale pair of these skinny jeans will show you to be right on trend. From Sass & Bide to Balmain, ripped skinny styles and acid wash rocked the fashion runways for spring. Hold on to a pair for next winter too as New York Fashion Week Fall 2009 (Miss Sixty and Balmain) proved that acid washed denim is here to stay for a while, or at least for another season.

In stark contrast to this season’s baggy harem pants, skinny-legged acid wash jeans (the more rips the better) provide a sleek look for slender legs. This throwback to the '80s makes a dramatic comeback.

For those who are old enough to have embraced the distressed denim trend the first time round, you may even have some vintage pieces lurking in the back of the wardrobe. For DIY distressed denim then, according to Elle magazine (August 2009) take a pair of jeans, a cheese grater and a bottle of bleach will do the job and give Balmain a run for their money!

However for an up-to-date look go for subtle colors like very light blue, gray and black. Alongside the season’s faded and bleached jeans are acid washed jumpers, dresses and jackets.

How to Wear Acid Wash Jeans

Carrying off this tricky trouser trend (especially if you are the wrong side of 25) is about getting the shape of the jeans right. If you have the kind of figure where skinny legged jeans make you feel like a duck then opt for a straight leg cut.

Heeled, studded gladiators bring acid wash denim bang up-to-date. Throw over a fitted military-inspired jacket or a loose and lanky blazer. Add to that the '80s look of big hair, jelly bracelets, a retro print top or a crisp white shirt and you are wardrobe ready for spring summer 2009.

What are Acid Wash Jeans?

The faded look of acid wash is achieved by using chemicals to strip the color off the top layer of denim, leaving the white fabric exposed underneath. This can be done all over the material or just in parts to give a splotchy appearance.

According to alrashidmall.com, acid wash was first commercialized in 1986, by the Italian firm Rifle. However, the process was actually but the process was actually patented by the Italian Candida Laundry Company in the same year.

This season it’s time to lighten up with some acid wash denim. Wear it if you dare!
