For women who like to keep abreast of the latest trends, it’s easy to look stylish this winter with a few well placed accessories and one or two investment pieces.
A Statement Coat
A stylish winter’s coat in one of Fall 2009's dramatic silhouettes is worth the investment when it comes to style points. Perfect to go over chunky knits or bulky outfits is the hottest coat of the season, the cape, in the boldest of colors.
A Snood
Replace that faithful woolen scarf with a fashionable slouchy snood this winter 2009. One of the season’s key accessories, to be worn round the neck, over a sweater, dress or coat.
Elbow-Length Gloves
Feminine long leather gloves influenced by the glamor of the 1940s add a touch of class this Fall Winter. 2009. Fingerless, embellished or brighty colored. Last year's standard-length gloves simply just won't do.
A Colorful Wool Scarf
A colorful scarf is the easiest and warmest way to brighten up a winter outfit. Oversized and über long is the look de jour. For extra style points, it should be draped from the neck and left to hang loosely down to the hem of an outfit.
Opaque Tights
Bold-colored opaque tights are another way to add a pop of color to a winter wardrobe. Teal blue, fuschia pink or dark berry shades make a welcome change from black. Classier than leggings, heavy denier opaque tights cover a multitude of skins (particulary on hairy days) and are great leg slimmers. For the more adventurous, patterned opaques, from houndstooth checks to tartan and polka dot to animal print are flooding the high streets. However, team them with a simple outfit like a plain sweater dress, as this hot hoisery makes enough of a statement on its own.
Red Lipstick
Winter is the time to dare-to-wear dramatic red to brighten up a drab outfit. For those women who cannot wear a full-on red without looking drained then try a sheer lip color or a red with a pink or blue base. Remember to apply a lipliner first which is slightly paler.
Oversized Sunglasses
Oversized specs look chic and mysterious, come rain or shine. They insantly add a hint of mystique and glamour, and make one of the biggest style statements (think Victoria Beckham!).
A Quirky Clutch Purse
Winter is the time for a crazy clutch bag – making it the talking point at Christmas parties. Stylish clutches like Lulu Guinness' iconic lips clutch are a great fashion investment, or a purse embellished with this season's sparkly sequins or feathers is fun and flirty.
A Vintage Dress
Be a femme fatale in vintage 1940’s wiggle dress. Embodying the glitz and glamour of Hollywood in the ‘40s pencil dress will be a versatile wardrobe staple for Christmas parties. Find them in gold and sliver brocade or classic black or sex siren red, this is a perfect dress for curvy women as it accentuates their hour-glass shape. For more boyish silhouettes, add curves with a wide belt to cinch in the waist still further.
Over-the-knee Boots
Not for the fainthearted (or those with ample thighs). Over-the-knee boots are the hottest heels for winter but should be worn with care. Avoid even the merest hint of “Pretty Woman” by teaming them with soft slouchy sweater dresses or cardigan coats and staying away from anything remotely clingy.
