Learn how to minimize the appearance of a big bust by wearing clothes that flatter your shape. Find out which cuts and styles suit you best, with these 10 fashion fixes.
For big-busted women having large breasts can be a mixed blessing. When it comes to dressing fashionably, many styles look better on boyish figures, and many well-endowed women feel self-conscious in the clothes they wear.
So much can be achieved, however by taking more care with the styles you buy, learning to dress for your shape rather than just buying that style you fell in love with on the rack. Wearing the right cut will actually have the effect of minimizing the appearance of your bust, rather than actually accentuating it.
For example, you’ll be amazed at how your choice of neckline can completely change the look of your figure. Turtle-necks, polo-necks, boat-necks and crew-necks are not good for the bigger-busted woman, as they tend to create a solid uni-boob look.
How to Minimize the Look of a Large Bust
Whilst there are never any hard and fast style rules, (as you need to take into account other aspects of your figure too), the following guidelines will help to fix your figure, by advising you how not to mistakenly over accentuate your bust:
Stripes can be your best friend or foe. Avoid horizontal stripes at all costs, but vertical can be slimming and diagonal stripes can give the appearance of a smaller bust.
Make sure you are wearing the right size bra. Ill fitting ones can add additional bulk and make you appear even larger. If you are overhanging at the sides or if the bra rides up in the front, get measured profesionally at a proper fitting. Women's ba sizes can change with their weight increase or loss, there is no guarantee you are the same size as a year ago.
V-necks, scoop-necks and square-necklines all have the power to reduce the appearance of a fuller-bust. The reason for this is that they provide an open expanse between your neck and chest, creating the illusion of a smaller bust. V-necks highlight the cleavage too, and square necks can be surprisingly flattering. In winter, keeping your neck warm by accessorizing with a fashionable scarf, is preferable to wearing a high neck.
Certain dress styles are more flattering for the fuller-bust. This includes the wrap dress (perfect for showing off those curves) and an empire-line cut, which is fitted just below the bust. Shift dresses can also be flattering depending on the cut. Keep to the low neck policy, and buy a size which skims rather then clings.
Loose and baggy smock style tops and dresses will make you look larger than you are, but you can get away with the style if you cinch in the waist with a belt, making it fitted. Contrary to what you might think, a belt helps accentuate your bust in a positive, rather than negative way. Avoid any dress or top which falls volumnous from the bust line, look for a style which first fits under the bust, and then falls from there.
Sleeve-lengths are also important. You’ll find a ¾ sleeve on jackets, blouses and dresses more slimming than a full or short-sleeve. Sleeveless dresses are likely to draw attentin to the bust.
Jackets and coats should be single-breasted rather than double, with a low-neckline, and ideally nipped-in at the waist. Avoid large collars, which give extra bulk around your neck and bust
For a minimizing effect, wear dark colors, or dark background prints on your top half. Avoid small, busy prints, and overly large ones.
One-piece swimsuits should have good support and some detailing away from the bust line, to draw attention to other areas. A swimsuit with ruching around the bust is minimizing. One of the best swimwear brands for big-busted women is Miraclesuit, which has numerous styles that are cleverly designed give the impression of a smaller bust. Finding bikini tops to fit can prove challenging, ideally go for a bra top with support and wide straps, or a halter-neck top. However a bandeau style with cup support can actually be slimming as it separates the breasts. The current '50s style swimsuits offer more coverage, whilst looking right-on-trend.
Oversized handbags and purses are more flattering than small shoulder bags, or tiny clutches carried under the arms.Large handbags tend to draw attention away from the bust and make your breasts appear smaller, in relation to the sheer size of the bag.
